Try asking an AI assistant a question your customers ask you before they book. Note which companies it mentions, which sources it cites and how accurate the information is. This simple check shows you where to start looking at your brand’s visibility in AI answers.
What Is GEO
GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of getting your brand, content and data into the answers AI models write: as a cited source, as a recommended company, or as a trusted provider of facts.
You’ll also see other names for it: AEO (answer engine optimization), AI SEO or LLM optimization. The idea is the same everywhere. Classic SEO helps your website climb a list of links; GEO helps AI use your information in its answer and name you as the source.
How AI Chooses Its Sources
To show up in AI answers, it helps to understand where the models get their information. There are two main mechanisms, and different systems mix them in different proportions.
Training Data
Large language models learn from a huge body of text from the internet. If your brand is mentioned often and consistently in trustworthy sources, like the press, directories, reviews and forums, the model “knows” more about you. This is a long-term effect, and it’s tied directly to how well known your brand is.
Real-Time Search
ChatGPT’s search mode, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews search the web for current information before answering, read several pages and put a summary together from them. What matters here is how easily the system can find and “read” your page, and how clearly it answers the question. Google’s AI features rely on Google’s own index, so websites that are strong in organic search have an advantage.
The Main Systems at a Glance
ChatGPT answers both from its own knowledge and by searching the web, and often shows links to its sources when it searches.
Gemini is built on Google’s ecosystem and closely tied to Google Search and Google Business Profile data.
Perplexity was built as a search assistant from the start and always numbers the sources in its answers.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode show an AI summary with source links on the regular results page, or in a separate mode.
How GEO Differs From SEO
GEO doesn’t replace SEO; it’s built on top of it. But the goals, the form of the results and the way you measure them are different.
| Criterion | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Where results show | SEOIn Google’s list of organic results | GEOIn the text of an AI answer and its list of sources |
| What success looks like | SEOA ranking and a click | GEOA brand mention, a citation, a recommendation |
| What you optimize | SEOA page and a keyword | GEOA fact, an answer, your brand and its context |
| Type of query | SEOShort search phrases | GEOLonger, conversational questions |
| Authority signals | SEOLinks, technical quality, content | GEOBrand mentions, consistent facts, expertise |
| Measurement | SEOSearch Console, Analytics, rank tracking | GEOMonitoring AI answers, referral traffic from AI tools |
An AI answer can show your brand’s name, a link to a specific page, or both. Track these cases separately when you measure: a mention on its own doesn’t mean your website was used as a source.
This shift also feeds so-called “zero-click” search: people get the answer straight from the AI and may never visit a website. In that world, value isn’t measured by visits alone. If an AI answer names your company as a trusted option, people may look you up later, call you or book directly.
SEO helps customers find you. GEO helps AI mention your brand, and describe it correctly.
Why GEO Matters for Cleaning Companies
Look at which sources AI answers rely on for questions about your service and your city. Do they cite local companies, big directories or national chains? Is the information current, or are there outdated prices and services? This shows you what’s missing from the sources that exist today.
People also ask AI assistants the way they talk: “who does a good move-out clean in Austin” or “how much should a deep clean cost for a three-bedroom house”. AI understands these questions well, but for the answer it still looks for sources where the topic is explained clearly and completely. A well-structured page that answers a specific question gives you a real advantage here.
Then there are customers who ask in Spanish. In many US cities, part of your market asks AI assistants in Spanish, and if your website is only in English, your brand may have no place in those answers at all. Spanish pages, set up correctly with hreflang, and the same information in both languages make the difference here.
Practical Steps: How to Start With GEO
The good news is that most of GEO rests on the same foundation as good SEO. The steps below work for both at once.
Make sure AI systems can read your website. Check your robots.txt and your server’s security settings: sometimes a firewall or bot-protection service blocks AI crawlers by accident. Important text should be in the HTML, not only loaded by JavaScript or baked into an image. This part is technical SEO.
Write content with direct answers. Put the answer to each important question at the start of its section, short and clear, then the details. Phrase headings the way customers ask. It’s much easier for AI to pull a passage from text like this.
Use concrete facts. Prices in dollars, time frames, service areas, hours, what each service includes. Vague marketing phrases like “top quality” or “a personal approach” give AI no information.
Add structured data. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage and Article schemas help search engines and AI understand who you are and what you offer.
Keep your information consistent. Your company name, address, phone number and key facts should match on your website, your Google Business Profile, social media and directories. Conflicting data lowers AI’s trust.
Grow mentions of your brand. Articles and interviews in local media, expert comments, listings in industry directories and customer reviews are all trust signals for AI. Here GEO overlaps closely with off-page SEO and PR.
Show your expertise. Name your authors and their experience, and show update dates and sources. Content backed by a real person and real experience is more trustworthy for Google and for AI.
Update your content regularly. AI systems that search in real time often prefer current information. Outdated prices or services can end up in an AI answer in the wrong form.
How to Measure GEO Results
To judge your results, save the date of each check, the question, the system you used and the answer. When you measure again, come back to the same questions, and track cited sources and actual visits separately.
Traffic From AI
In Google Analytics you can group visits from sources like chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. This shows how many people come from AI answers and which pages they land on. Not every visit gets measured this way, since some people search for your brand name separately, but it’s enough to see the trend.
Regular Answer Checks
Make a list of 20–50 questions your potential customers ask AI, for example “which cleaning company is best for move-out cleaning in Denver” or “who offers eco-friendly house cleaning near me”. Check every month whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention your brand, in what context and based on which source. If you serve Spanish-speaking customers, ask in Spanish too. There are also tools that automate part of this.
Visibility in Google AI Overviews
Search Console data includes impressions from AI Overviews, but doesn’t show them separately. So check your target searches by hand or with tools: does an AI summary appear, and is your website among its sources?
Growth in Brand Searches
When AI mentions your brand more often, people often search for it on Google afterwards. Growth in branded searches in Search Console is an indirect but important sign that GEO is working.
How Long Until You See Results
The effect of technical fixes and content updates can show within a few weeks in AI systems that search in real time. Building brand authority, just like in SEO, takes months. So review your results every quarter, not every week, because AI answers to the same question can change from one day to the next.
GEO for Different Kinds of Cleaning Businesses
The general principles of GEO are the same for everyone, but the priorities differ by the kind of business.
Residential Cleaning
House cleaning and maid services show up most in questions like “who should I hire” or “which cleaning company is best near me”. The main sources here are your Google Business Profile, customer reviews, maps and local directories. A complete profile, accurate hours, real photos and a steady flow of reviews strengthen both local SEO and AI recommendations at the same time.
Specialty and One-Off Services
More and more people ask AI to compare services and prices: “what’s the difference between a deep clean and a move-out clean” or “how much does post-construction cleaning cost”. What counts for AI here is complete, structured information on your service pages: what’s included, prices or price ranges, time frames, service areas and a Service schema. Generic descriptions copied from other websites work poorly.
Commercial Cleaning
For office, medical and janitorial cleaning companies, GEO’s main tool is expert content: guides, detailed answers to frequent questions, checklists and your team’s comments in local and industry media. The more often your experts’ names and views appear in trusted sources, the more likely AI is to treat your company as an authority in its field.
Check how easily people can find prices, service terms and what’s included on your pages. Information you often explain to customers over the phone can be useful on your website too.
Common GEO Mistakes
Common mistakes
4 to avoidIgnoring SEO. GEO isn’t an alternative to SEO. A website that Google indexes poorly will be less visible to AI too.
Mass-produced AI text. Generic content with no unique facts gives AI nothing new and no reason to cite you.
Blocking AI bots without knowing it. Some websites block AI crawlers with their default settings. That should be a deliberate decision, not an accident.
Expecting quick results. Brand authority and mentions build up over months, just like in SEO.
